"Théophile Alexandre Steinlen (Swiss, 1859–1923) brought Art Nouveau elegance to cabaret ephemera, turning this moody feline into a poster legend for Montmartre’s Le Chat Noir. The touring show flopped, but the cat - haloed like a saint and smirking like a sinner - became immortal. It was a marketing stunt that became a movement. Steinlen, a pacifist and anarchist, once said he trusted cats more than politicians."
