"Alexej von Jawlensky (Russian-German, 1864–1941) painted not faces, likenesses, nor portraits, but meditative icons stripped to their essence. A pioneer of German Expressionism and a former soldier turned mystic, he distilled the human face into bold lines and burning stillness. Jawlensky believed the face could express the divine. By the end, he painted them obsessively, even as arthritis made holding a brush nearly impossible."
