The Artwork
Madonna with a Machine Gun by Kārlis Padegs
The Curatorial Note (inside front cover)
"Kārlis Padegs (Latvian, 1911 - 1940) didn’t care for sentimental nationalism; he preferred his art sharp, strange, and dripping with contradiction. This piece is a runway of ruin: a serene, flaxen-haired figure flanked by rifles, wrapped in the romance of catastrophe. Fashion meets fatalism, and nobody blinks. Though Latvia embraced idealized tradition, Padegs said his art was “for the sick, the broken, and the dreaming.” Mission accomplished."
