The Blurb
María Blanchard (Spanish, 1881 - 1932) rendered motherhood as both monument and mystery. With Cubist bones and Renaissance blood, she constructed this madonna like a cathedral: devotional, solemn, and unyielding. She once described painting as her “only way to walk freely”, and she walked well beyond the modernism boys' club.
