Max Beckmann (German, 1884–1950) called his paintings “secret diaries,” but this one reads more like a confession booth in a Berlin nightclub. Bodies tangle, onlookers leer, instruments blare - it’s both orgy and opera, filtered through the lens of German Expressionism and the razor edge of Neue Sachlichkeit. Painted during his final year in exile in New York, it distills a lifetime of psychic tension and aesthetic rebellion. Beckmann died while walking to the Met to see this very painting. The city got there before he did.
