The Artwork
Daughter in a Rocker by Henry Lyman Sayen
The Blurb
"Henry Lyman Sayen (American, 1875–1918) turned the domestic into the dazzling, rendering a rocking-chair-bound daughter as a kaleidoscope of Cubist angles and ornamental flair. The checkerboard dress alone feels like a chess match between Klimt and Kandinsky. Before devoting himself to modernist painting, Sayen invented early X-ray technology for military hospitals - making him uniquely qualified to reimagine both the exterior and interior of the human form. Not many Cubists doubled as radiologists."
